:: Introduction

Dear friends,

I am pleased to share with you the release of our 2007 Annual Report!

Each year, GYAN brings together thousands of youth organizations and mobilizes millions through its work. In 2007, more than 3 million young people in over 100 countries around the world took part in the 8th annual Global Youth Service Day. The Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS, now over 4,000 members strong, organized events in more than 30 countries to mark World AIDS Day, and held hundreds of trainings to empower young leaders in scaling up HIV/AIDS interventions amongst their peers. GYAN-Mexico rallied thousands around issues of poverty and co-organized a major concert for 15,000 people.

These are just some of the highlights of the impact our work had last year. While our team at GYAN is proud of what we achieved in 2007, we are even more excited about the strategic alliance that has started to take shape between GYAN and TakingITGlobal, our sister group in Toronto. We are convinced that combining our efforts will allow us to take the support and services that we provide to the global youth movement to a new level, thereby strengthening the youth movement itself.

By aligning our two organizations, GYAN and TIG also hope to set an example that will inspire similar alliances among civil society organizations, eventually leading to a unified global movement for social change. There are millions of organizations around the world focusing on issues as diverse as human rights, climate change and poverty eradication. Yet we all share one common goal: to preserve this beautiful planet earth, and to make it a better and more joyous place to live for all of humanity. I have no doubt that we can achieve this goal, but it requires us to overcome institutional egos and instead work together in a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect.

In Peace,

Franziska Seel
Executive Director
