Join the 9th Annual Global Youth Service Day on April 25-27, 2008!

Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is the largest annual celebration of young volunteers, where millions of young people in countries everywhere highlight and carry out thousands of community improvement projects. All organizations are encouraged to plan and highlight youth-led community service projects and may want to highlight existing projects to the media and surrounding community, or may choose to organize special projects and events that involve the broader community in GYSD.

We welcome all interested organizations to submit their applications for National Lead Agency or Local Organizer. Please check the GYSD website to find out who is already involved in your country, get ideas for events, and find resources that can help you in your planning!

:: Introduction

Dear friends,

It is with great honor and excitement that I'm writing my first introduction to this newsletter. YouthlinkExpress has for many years been one of my main sources of information about the activities of the global youth movement. While pursuing volunteer youth activities in Germany and other countries, I always enjoyed reading this newsletter. It helped me keep the bigger picture in mind, and showed me that - even if slowly - the collective efforts of youth and youth organizations around the world actually do have an impact.

I was fortunate enough to meet two of the co-founders of GYAN in 2001 at an event organized by the United Nations Programme on Youth. Up until then, I felt alone in my struggle to strengthen youth participation and change the perception that society has of young people. Learning about the work that GYAN and other young people around the world were doing encouraged me to continue. Not only have their stories been a great source of inspiration and motivation for me, I also realized that I was part of a global movement: there were millions of other young people who, like me, wanted to change the world for the better.

GYAN's efforts to unite the global youth movement and help those working for young people's recognition and full participation in society is as important today as it was seven years ago, when I first met the co-founders. I wholeheartedly believe in young people, and in the power of collaboration and networking. It is not through one person or one organization alone, but through the collective efforts of a whole generation that we can have the greatest impact, and improve the lives of those around us.

As our team is eagerly preparing for a new phase in a strengthened partnership with our sister group, TakingITGlobal, we would like to express our gratitude to all who have come this far with us. We hope that we can count on your continued support and participation in GYAN in the years to come.

In Friendship,

Franziska Seel
Executive Director
